On April 25, 2015, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck near Kathmandu, Nepal, followed by a series of significant aftershocks. Initial indications put the number of deaths at more than 2000 and there is extensive damage to infrastructure.

The Government of Canada immediately responded to the emergency with a $5-million contribution to provide life-saving assistance through experienced humanitarian organizations.

Canada has also deployed an assessment team to evaluate the extent of the damage, the resulting humanitarian needs of those affected by the earthquake and how Canada might best respond. The Canadian Armed Forces are currently positioning their personnel and resources to ensure a prompt reaction.
