April 26, 2019

On April 25th, Ambassador David MacNaughton spoke with Canadian-American Business Council CEO Maryscott Greenwood as part of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Transportation Border Summit. In a wide-ranging conversation, the Ambassador made the case for why Canada should have an immediate and permanent exemption to U.S. section 232 steel and aluminum tariffs to create space to move forward with approving the USMCA. He argued a modernized trading relationship will improve efficiency at our shared border, but  additional steps are needed to ensure the border is also the safest in the world. To this end, Ambassador MacNaughton touched on the status of Canada’s entry/exit initiatives, the expansion of preclearance operations at additional ports of entry, and his experiences working with the Department of Homeland Security. For basketball fans, the Ambassador also predicted the Toronto Raptors will win this year’s NBA Finals.
